B.2.3.1 A phases of movement approach

Phase analysis is the descriptive process of dividing up a movement into relevant parts so that attention can be focused on the performance of each part

There are 4 phases in the phase analysis model:

Preperation

  • Athletes prepare mentally and physically

  • Focus on body position, balance and optimal positioning

  • Anticipation of the skills demands is a key component of this phase

Force production

  • Involves synchronised movement of the skeletal and muscular systems in producing the movement and force needed to perform

  • Discrete skills (clear start and end), this phase encompasses when the force is applied to an object

  • Continuous skill (no clear start/finish), this phase is when force is applied to the pedals

Critical Instant

  • The specific moment within the skill execution that significantly affects the skill

  • Determines the accuracy, power and effectiveness of the skill

Follow through

  • Occurs straight after the critical instant in discrete skills

  • Involves continuing the motion and maintaining body position

  • Prevent injury, enhance accuracy, and improve overall control of the skill
