  1. C1 S1 What 4 things are needed to make a state? Explain each one. - Sovereignty, Population, Territory, Government.

  2. C3 S1 State the Preamble. - We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common Defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

  3. C2 S3 The Articles of Confederation were weak. What could the Central government actually do? Would we have succeeded as a nation under the Articles of Confederation? - Did not give enough power to the government, states had too much control. They could declare war, make treaties, fix weights and measures, build an army, post offices, Indian affairs, send representatives, and borrow money. Would not have succeeded, confederations never work.

  4. C2 S4 Explain the plans and compromises of the Convention in Philadelphia. (New Jersey, Virginia, and the Great Compromise, etc.) - Create a new government, come together constitutional convention. Inside that meeting, was the New Jersey plan (William Paterson Plural Executive- two or more chief executive officers selected by Congress, each state gets a vote), the Virginia plan (Governor Edmond Randolph [James Madison] 3 Branches of Government), the Connecticut Compromise (Congress will be composed of two houses. Senate: equally represented. House: based on population), the 3/5 compromise (All free persons and 3/5’s of all other persons shall be counted in determining representation and direct taxes), slave trade compromise (Congress was forbidden to act on the slave trade for a period of at least 20 years).

  5. C3 S2 Formal Amendments change the Constitution. How do you propose them and then ratify them? Where is that found in the Articles? How difficult is it to pass an Amendment to the Constitution? - Changed through Article 5, amendments may be proposed by congress by 2/3 vote in both houses or by a constitutional convention called by Congress when requested by 2/3 (34) of the State Legislatures. Over 10,000 proposed, 27 total passed. Ratified by ¾ (38) of the States, vote no can change to yes, but vote yes must stay.

  6. C4 Article I, Section 9 and 10 Protection of legal rights. The Constitution states many rules under their powers. List and describe powers that are prohibited and powers that are necessary and proper. - Bill (writ) of Attainder (without benefit of a trial), Writ of Habeas Corpus (brought to the court for crimes), Ex post facto law (retroactive law done afterwards).

  7. Articles List the age, term length, # of terms, and citizenship requirements for the Senate, House, President, V.P., and Supreme Court. - Senate: 30, 6, Unlimited, Citizen for 9. House: 25, 2, Unlimited, Citizen for 7. President: 35, 4, 2, Born Citizen. S.C.: None, none, none, none.

  8. C5 S2 What is the difference between Republicans and Democrats? And how has this affected our country? - Democrats are generally considered liberal, while Republicans are seen as conservative. Democratic Party typically supports a larger government role in economic issues, Republicans, however, typically want a smaller government that is less involved in the economy. Democrats favour a progressive tax to finance government’s expanded role, while Republicans support lower taxes for all. Republicans do support a large budget for the military. Democrats seek greater freedoms, while Republicans follow more traditional values. Democrats typically dominate in large cities, while Republicans are especially popular in rural areas.

  9. C6 What are the requirements needed to be able to vote in the state of Nebraska? -

    All voters must be citizens of the U.S., must be at least 18 years of age, must be registered to vote, must live in the state in order to register, and must register at least 10 days before the election day.

  10. C Examines the amendments to the constitution. What are some of your individual rights and freedoms in this document? (Use 10 Examples)
