4. Inversion

   1. Vous parlez français.

      1. Parlez-vous français?

   2. Elle est élève.

      1. Est-elle élève?

   3. Il mange à midi.

      1. Mange-t-il à midi?

         1. If the verb ends in a vowel and the subject pronoun is il, elle, or on, a t is inserted between the verb and the pronoun for pronounciation.

Inversion is only done with subject pronouns. You cannot invert a proper noun or any other noun.

In this case, you add the appropriate subject pronoun to invert with the verb and place the original noun before them.

Negation

To make a sentence negative, place ne (n’) before a verb a pas after it.

• Je ne dessine pas bien.

• Ne parlez pas en classe.

• Il n’a pas de devoirs ce soir.

When you have two verbs in a row, only make the conjugated verb negative.

• Elle n’aime pas étudier au café.

When making an inverted question negative, place ne…pas around the whole inversion unit

• Abdel n’aime-t-il pas étudier?

• Ne détestez-vous pas travailler?
