Patient Positioning Protocol

Introduction

  • Importance of safe patient handling to prevent injury.

  • Ensure 2 healthcare workers participate unless the patient can assist fully.

Preparation

  • Place the patient in a supine position.

  • Ensure the head of the bed is flat.

  • Adjust bed height to a comfortable level for both nurses.

Moving the Patient

  • Pillows and Arms

    • Remove the pillow from beneath the patient’s head and shoulders.

    • Place the pillow at the head of the bed, out of the way.

    • Instruct the patient to place their arms across their chest for safety and comfort.

  • Using the Draw Sheet

    • Position the draw sheet under the patient by turning them from side to side.

    • Extend the draw sheet from shoulder to thigh for better support.

  • Returning to Supine Position

    • After placing the sheet, roll the patient back onto their back, positioning them comfortably.

Fanning and Boosting the Patient

  • Fan Folding the Draw Sheet

    • Fan fold the draw sheet at the patient’s sides to prepare for lift.

    • Each nurse should grasp the sheet firmly near the patient.

  • Preparation for Lift

    • Stand with feet apart in a forward-backward stance and flex knees and hips for stability.

    • Coordination is essential: shift weight from the front leg to the back leg when lifting.

Lifting the Patient

  • Coordination and Communication

  • On the count of 3, both nurses will lift together.

  • Encourage the patient to assist by lifting their head during the boost.

  • Example prompt: "On the count of 3, we're gonna boost you up. 1, 2, 3."

  • Post-Lift Adjustments

  • After boosting, assist the patient in adjusting the pillow behind their head.

  • Ensure the patient is relaxed and comfortable after the move.

Conclusion

  • Confirm the patient's position is comfortable.

  • Emphasize the importance of communication and teamwork in patient care.
