Types of Circulatory Shock

I. Primary Shock

  • Characterized by fainting or collapse due to low blood pressure.

  • Caused by cerebral anoxia from circulatory insufficiency.

  • Triggers (PIUNL): painful stimuli, injury, unpleasant odors, nitrites, local anesthetics.

  • Risk of progression to secondary shock without prompt treatment.

II. Secondary Shock

  • Defined as delayed or refractory shock.

  • Signs and Symptoms include (S-CPC,SRL):

    • Cold, pale, cyanotic skin

    • Sweating

    • Rapid pulse

    • Low blood pressure

  • Commonly associated with corrosive substances or depressant drugs.
