Classification of Rights

  • Natural Rights

    • These are inherent and God-given rights to each and every individual in order for them to live a happy life

    • These rights cannot be denied by the government and cannot be sold,  transferred, or removed

  • Constitutional or Legal Rights

    • These are rights conferred and protected by the Constitution which cannot be modified or taken away by the legislative body

    • Political Rights

      • These are rights which give the citizens the power to participate, directly or indirectly, in the establishment or administration of the government

    • Civil Rights

      • These are rights which the law enforces at the instance of private individuals for the purpose of securing to them the enjoyment of their means of happiness

    • Social and Economic Rights

      • These are rights intended to ensure the well-being and economic security of each and every individual

    • Rights of the Accused

      • These are rights intended for the protection of a person accused of any crime

  • Statutory Rights

    • These are rights conferred and promulgated by the legislative or the law-making body in which may also be abolished by the same body

Characteristics of Human Rights

  • Universal

    • Human rights belong to all people

  • Inalienable

    • Human rights cannot be taken away

  • Interconnected

    • Human rights are dependent on one another

  • Indivisible

    • Human rights cannot be treated in isolation

  • Non-discriminatory

    • Human rights should be respected without prejudice

Importance and Significance of Human Rights

  • It ensures people that their basic needs are being met

    • Every person needs to have access to their basic necessities such as food, water, clothing, shelter, and medicines

  • It protects the vulnerable sectors or groups from any kind of abuse

    • Every person, especially the most vulnerable ones, should be protected from the abuse of anyone especially of those in position and power

  • It allows the people to stand up against corruption

    • Every person who experience abuse and corruption has the right to speak up and fight against it

  • It encourages the freedom of speech and expression

    • Every person has the right to speak up freely without fear of endangering others and the government

  • It gives the people the freedom to practice their religion

    • Every person has been given the right to exercise his/her religion and to practice spiritual beliefs in peace

  • It allows the people to love who they chose

    • Every person has the inherent right to love and be loved by the person they want and chose to

  • It encourages equal work opportunities

    • Every person has the right to work and make a living and to be treated equal in the work opportunities

  • It gives people the access to education

    • Every person has an equal access to education

  • It protects the environment

    • Every person has the right to clean air, clean water, clean soil, and the environment

  • It provides a universal standard that holds government accountable 

    • The government needs to set guidelines and principles for them to follow violation of which will hold them accountable for their actions
