1.05 notes- human-environment interaction

concepts of nature and society- sustainability, natural resources, land use

theories regarding the interaction of natural environment with human societies have evolved from environmental determinism to possibilism

environmental perspective- interaction between physical and human systems or between natural landscapes and societies

environmental determinism- environment determines how societies develop

possibilism- humans can learn about their environment and make good choices adaption to environment (crops, climate)

  • not only shape environment, but shaped by it

human interaction with environment

  • depend- rely on air, water, food, precipitation

  • adapt- clothing, transportation, homes, economic/recreational activites

  • modify- need, ability, benefit, can have risks and disadvantages (ex: oil drilling, irrigation systems, cleared land, road systems, emissions, pollution)

  • positive effects- protect from flooding, energy sources, easier transportation

  • negative effects- desertification causes population increase (lack of food), poverty (increased with desertification), poor farming methods, overgrazing, use of trees/vegetation for firewood, stationary nomads

  • always risks and trade offs
