TOPICAL ANTIBACTERIAL DRUGS

• Tripple Antibiotic Ointment (bacitracin + neomycin + polymyxin B)

• mupirocin: used to treat impetigo (topically) or MRSA (intranasally)

• silver sulfadiazine: used to prevent/treat burns for infection

  • !!! do not use in pt w/ sulfonamide drugs

ANTIACNE DRUGS

acne is caused by Propionibacterium acnes

many drugs cause photosensitivity

• benzoyl peroxide: causes death of P. acnes by slowly liberating free oxygen

  • TE: antibacterial, antiseptic, drying & keratolytic actions

  • AE: peeling skin, redness, warmth sensation

  • PE: takes 4-6 weeks to see effects

retinoids: vitamin A derivatives

• isotretinoin: inhibits sebaceous gland activity (oral)

  • TE: used for severe acne

  • AE: suicidal ideation !!!cannot become pregnant during or 2 months after!!
