Motivation

Motivation = internal mechanisms and external stimuli which arouse and direct our behaviour

Intrinsic Motivation:

  • internal drives to participate or do well

  • internal mechanisms which arouse and direct our behaviour

Examples:

  • fun/ enjoyment

  • satisfaction

  • a love for the sport

  • personal accomplishment

  • pride

Extrinsic Motivation:

  • external drive and comes in the form of rewards, as opposed to internal feelings

Examples:

  • medals/ trophies

  • prize money

  • salary/ wage

  • recognition

  • to please a significant other

Advantages

Disadvantages

Intrinsic

- more valuable - do it for yourself

- self-sufficient

- encourages lifelong participation in sport

- may not be enough to maintain motivation

- not useful for cognitive performers

Extrinsic

- improve confidence

- bigger impact

- could undermine intrinsic Motivation

- could lose motivation if  extrinsic factors are removed
