  • The bombing of Pearl Harbor led to a rise in anti-Japanese hate and fear, leading to a surge in racism towards them

  • The government likely had the Japanese on their radar pre-Pearl Harbor because of the war

  • The Japanese were excluded from becoming legal citizens far before WWII and Pearl Harbor

Farwell to Manzanar, Chapters 9-11

Pearl Harbor was bombed on 12/7/1941. The December Riot at Manzanar happened on 12/5/1942.

Frustations at Manzanar:

  • Incarcerates at Manzanar desired higher wages

  • Incarcerates want better food

  • There was a desire to revolt against the government

  • Many were Patriotic and wanted to be treated like other Americans

  • Incarcerates at Manzanar wished to go back to Japan so they would be equal

Why was the December Riot significant?

  • It reflected the friction between incarcerees

  • Two incarcerees were killed, and 10 were wounded by military police

  • After the Riot, conditions at the camp improved, but tensions intensified in Feb. 1943 when the government required incarcerees to answer a loyalty questionnaire
