Farwell to Manzanar, Chapters 9-11
Pearl Harbor was bombed on 12/7/1941. The December Riot at Manzanar happened on 12/5/1942.
Frustations at Manzanar:
Incarcerates at Manzanar desired higher wages
Incarcerates want better food
There was a desire to revolt against the government
Many were Patriotic and wanted to be treated like other Americans
Incarcerates at Manzanar wished to go back to Japan so they would be equal
Why was the December Riot significant?
It reflected the friction between incarcerees
Two incarcerees were killed, and 10 were wounded by military police
After the Riot, conditions at the camp improved, but tensions intensified in Feb. 1943 when the government required incarcerees to answer a loyalty questionnaire
