Layers damaged

Treatment - water, gauze bandaging, antibiotic ointments, grafting (autograft vs. allograft)

Complications

1st Degree Burn

  • Skin is red and swollen, minimal pain, no blistering

  • Only epidermis

  • Cool and cover loosely, over the counter pain medication

2nd Degree Burn

  • Skin is red and blistering, severe pain

  • Epidermis and upper dermis are damaged

  • Cool and cover loosely, over the counter pain medications

  • Be cautious of infection!!!!!

3rd Degree Burn

  • Destroys entire skin layer, skin is gray/white/black (charred)

  • All layers including the hypodermis are affected

  • Partial/complete skin grafts or biomasks

  • Possible system shock and cardiac/respiratory arrest

Autographing

  • Taking skin

  • eliminate immune rejection risk, using the patient's own tissue, ensuring genetic compatibility and immune system acceptance.

Allograft

  • Taking from different donors can trigger immune reactions and rejection
