5.3 form vs function

form follows function is a principle associated with modernist architecture and industrial design

the principle is that the shape of a building or object should be primarily based upon its intended function or purpose

  • may be more difficult to integrate design with a brand image which may make it more difficult to gain client approval of design

  • designed has limited opportunities to experiment with materials/appearance of product

  • design may not have wow factor which may attract fewer customers to buy the product as they are drawn towards branding and appearance
