IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America,

 

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and

declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States

  • third largest country by size in the world after Russia and Canada

  • highest peak – Denali (Mount McKinley), Alaska (6,193m above sea level)

The United States lies in North America and borders the North Atlantic Ocean to the east and the North Pacific Ocean to the west. The length of the U.S. coastline is 19,924 km.

with CANADA (8,893 km, including 2,477 km with Alaska)

o   the longest border between any two countries in the world

o   officially known as the International Boundary

o   mostly along the 49th parallel (called Medicine Line by Native Americans)

o   established by the Treaty of Paris 1783; modified several times, most notably in 1846 (Oregon Question)

o   established by the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo (1848) and Gadsden Purchase (1853)
