Legal status

rights of citizen:

rights: freedom and privilege that citizens have

eg. the rights to vote,

obligation of citizens:

duties citizens have to fulfil

eg. Males citizens in SG is to serve NS. Under the enlistment act introduced in 1967, 18-year old male citizens and PRs are required to serve NS. Following the completion of full-time NS, they will be required to serve up to 40 days of operational ready national service per year, until 40/50 year old.

A sense of identity

identity: refers to how you perceive yourself and how you believe others perceive you

National identity: This comes from a shared belief of connectedness to one another and belonging to the country

citizenship- build stronger bonds and connections , increase sense of belonging

shared values

Values: principles and beliefs that influence a person’s attitudes, thinking and behaviour. Represent what is important to a person and help them prioritise, make decision and exercise judgement

Shared Values: values that are embraced and seen as important by a group of people

eg: - being thrifty as emphasised in a family - value of respect and resilience as affirmed in a school

Civic participations

civic participitation: citizens actively taking part in public affairs

public affairs are matters of general interest of concern

  • volunteering their time, effort and money in matters they are concerned about

informal groups:

  • when there is an issue that requires attention, people organise themselves into informal community groups to address the concern

  • may not be registered with the government

  • generally exist for a period of time

formal groups:

  • have clear objectives

  • officially registered with the government

  • cater to specific needs and interest

  • devote their efforts over a sustained period of time

    eg. NGOs and Social service agencies
