Food Tests


Carbohydrates Test:
• Benedict's Test: Uses a bright blue liquid to detect the presence of monosaccharides and certain disaccharides.

Iodine Solution Test:

Uses a piece of test material to detect starch.
• Protein Test: Uses a mixture of beans, soup powder, and sodium hydroxide to test for protein.
• Protein Test: Blue indicates no proteins, Violet indicates proteins.

Lipids Test:
• Uses a mixture of ground peanuts, ether, and ether to test for lipids.
• Filter the ether and observe if any grease is present.

Summary of Food Test Results

• Benedict test: Blue for simple sugars.
• Iodine solution: Orange-brown, Blue-black, Orange-brown for starch.
• Copper Sulphate & Sodium Hydroxide solutions: Blue for proteins.
• Ether/Ethanol test: Colorless, no grease stain on filter paper.
