    • God has a right to show mercy, wrath, if he didnt sovereignly save some none would be saved

    • Scripture teaches that God is sovereign in salvation 


Atonement: the payment of the death penalty for sin

Because of sin: 

  • Man deserves death

  • Man is legally guilty before God 

  • God's wrath and anger is upon man 

  • Man is separated from God 

  • Man is under the influence of the Devil


Most Fundamental Event of the Atonement: Jesus took the full punishment that we deserved for our sins as a substitute in our place and that all other benefits find their anchor in this truth

Jesus Active Obedience: lived a perfectly righteous life, fulfilling all requirements of the Law in order to merit his people eternal life


Jesus Passive Obedience: subjecting himself to suffering and ultimately death in order to merit his people eternal life 


The Extent of Atonement 

Questions Under Consideration

  • For whom did Jesus die? 

  • Did Jesus die for all people?

  • Did Jesus die only for certain people?

  • Did Jesus' death actually save people?

  • Did Jesus' death only create the possibility of people being saved?


Two Views 

  • Jesus died for every human being, thus creating the possibility that some people would be saved. Limits the atonement in terms of power

  • Jesus died specifically for His people, thus ensuring their salvation. This limits the atonement in terms of its extent.
