Two Natures of Christ
Truly Man & Truly God
Unity of one person
The union of human and divine is necessary in order for the mediator to be our savior
Attributes of the Person of Christ
Truly God: omnipresence, eternality, omnipotence, deity, exact representative of God
Truly Man: Flesh & Blood, Hunger, Thirst, Sorrow, Fatigue
Resurrection
Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the single most important event in history
The most important question: “Is Jesus alive today or not?”
If Christ is not raised..
Faith is useless, Christians are liars, sinners are guilty, the dead are condemned, christians are to be pitied
Significance of the Resurrection
God accepted Jesus sacrifice, His people will one day rise, the basis for believers living a new life in Christ
Salvation
3 Things to Become a Christian: I am a sinner, Jesus died on the cross to save sinners, the only way to have sins forgiven is to trust in Christ
Framework of Salvation
The Father plans salvation, The Son accomplishes salvation, The Holy Spirit applies salvation
The Father plans salvation
God has a right to show mercy, wrath, if he didnt sovereignly save some none would be saved
Scripture teaches that God is sovereign in salvation
Atonement: the payment of the death penalty for sin
Because of sin:
Man deserves death
Man is legally guilty before God
God's wrath and anger is upon man
Man is separated from God
Man is under the influence of the Devil
Most Fundamental Event of the Atonement: Jesus took the full punishment that we deserved for our sins as a substitute in our place and that all other benefits find their anchor in this truth
Jesus Active Obedience: lived a perfectly righteous life, fulfilling all requirements of the Law in order to merit his people eternal life
Jesus Passive Obedience: subjecting himself to suffering and ultimately death in order to merit his people eternal life
The Extent of Atonement
Questions Under Consideration
For whom did Jesus die?
Did Jesus die for all people?
Did Jesus die only for certain people?
Did Jesus' death actually save people?
Did Jesus' death only create the possibility of people being saved?
Two Views
Jesus died for every human being, thus creating the possibility that some people would be saved. Limits the atonement in terms of power
Jesus died specifically for His people, thus ensuring their salvation. This limits the atonement in terms of its extent.
