Makeup Application and Client Consultation Flashcards

Client Consultation

  • Confirm specific make-up requirements, preferences, and the nature/importance of the occasion. Go beyond generalities to understand the client's expectations fully.

  • Build strong, professional relationships with clients by practicing clear, empathetic, and open communication. Address any concerns they may have and provide expert advice.

  • Ensure a welcoming and relaxing environment. Strive to make every client feel uniquely special through personalized service and attention to detail.

  • Clients are vital to the business. Ensure they feel genuinely welcome, thoroughly understood, sincerely acknowledged, and completely comfortable throughout the consultation and service.

Client Comfort and Professionalism

  • Actively listen to the client, respect their viewpoints and artistic preferences, and assist them in realizing their desired aesthetic outcome.

  • Maintain a warm, approachable, and professional image to inspire client trust and confidence in your skills.

  • Conduct a visual assessment of the client’s overall style and carefully examine their skin for any potential contraindications or specific needs.

  • Provide clear, concise instructions for changing or preparing for the service, always ensuring privacy and comfort.

Identifying Makeup Image

  • Carefully consider the occasion for which the makeup is required, the client's age group, and their typical lifestyle.

  • Accurately determine the client’s makeup needs, differentiating between requirements for a special occasion and preferences for everyday wear.

  • Take into account any client activities that could potentially affect makeup choice or durability, such as activities involving sweating or water exposure.

  • Ensure makeup application is appropriate for the client's age, enhancing their features without appearing artificial or exaggerated.

Consultation Process

  • Precisely determine the desired results through comprehensive visual and physical examination of the client’s skin and features.

  • Thoughtfully inquire about the client’s service history, any known allergies, and aspects of their lifestyle that may influence makeup selection.

  • Employ a tactful and sensitive approach, listening attentively without interjecting personal opinions or biases into the consultation.

Communication Techniques

  • Strategically use both open and closed questions to effectively gather detailed information about the client’s needs and preferences.

    • Closed questions: elicit concise yes/no answers to confirm specific details.

    • Open questions: encourage detailed, expansive responses using prompts like how, why, and when to gain deeper insights.

  • Skillfully rephrase client statements to confirm mutual understanding and demonstrate attentiveness during the conversation.

  • Respectfully allow clients to fully express their thoughts and preferences without interruption, creating a comfortable and collaborative atmosphere.

Hand Hygiene

  • Practice rigorous hand hygiene before and after every service, following glove use, after any contact with bodily substances, and whenever hands are visibly soiled.

  • Wash hands thoroughly using running water and liquid soap for a minimum of 20 seconds, or utilize an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.

Hand Washing Procedures (Method 1)

  • Remove all jewellery, thoroughly wet hands under running water, apply an adequate amount of liquid soap, and wash all hand surfaces meticulously for at least 20 seconds. Rinse thoroughly and dry with disposable towels.

  • Use a clean paper towel to turn off the taps, preventing recontamination of freshly washed hands.

Hand Washing Procedures (Method 2 - Sanitizer)

  • Remove all jewellery, apply a generous amount of hand sanitizer to the palm of one hand, and rub hands together, covering all surfaces until dry.

  • Soap dispensers should be regularly inspected, cleaned, and properly maintained before refilling to prevent contamination.

Preparing Service Area

  • Seat the client comfortably, ensuring they are positioned at your eye level to facilitate effective communication and service execution.

  • Maintain correct posture to prevent strain and ensure optimal access during the makeup application process.

  • Utilize protective coverings and appropriate hair restraints to maintain cleanliness and prevent contamination of the service area and the client.

Personal and Salon Hygiene

  • Uphold strict cleanliness standards to minimize the potential for disease transmission and maintain a safe environment for both clients and staff.

  • Adhere strictly to all relevant hygiene guidelines and legal requirements, including compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act.

  • Adopt daily personal hygiene practices, including bathing, maintaining clean hair/skin/hands/clothing, using deodorant, brushing/flossing teeth, and consistently wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Salon Hygiene

  • Consistently maintain a high level of cleanliness throughout the salon, including all surfaces, tools, and equipment.

  • Diligently follow all workplace policies and procedures pertaining to health, safety, and proper waste disposal to ensure a safe and compliant environment.

Sterilization, Sanitation, and Antisepsis

  • Sterilization: The complete destruction of all microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores.

    • Methods: Effective sterilization methods include the use of moist heat (121°C for 10-30 minutes), steaming in an autoclave, dry heat (160°C for 60 minutes), and irradiation techniques.

  • Sanitation: The process of reducing the number of microorganisms to a safe level, typically killing most but not all microorganisms.

    • Methods: Common sanitation methods involve the use of disinfectants, which are suitable for use on surfaces and equipment but not for application on the body.

  • Antiseptics: Substances designed to inhibit the growth and activity of microorganisms without necessarily killing them; suitable for use on the skin.

    • Application: Antiseptics are safe for use on the face and other parts of the body to reduce the risk of infection or contamination.
