Considering the US policies, including the Monroe Doctrine and Woodrow Wilson's Moral Diplomacy, why would the US stay out of WWI?

  • The United States decided to stay out of World War I for several reasons rooted in its foreign policy principles, particularly the Monroe Doctrine and Woodrow Wilson's Moral Diplomacy. The Monroe Doctrine, established in the early 19th century, warned European nations against interference in the Americas, promoting a sense of isolationism which discouraged engagement in European conflicts. President Woodrow Wilson's Moral Diplomacy further reinforced the idea that the U.S. should act as a moral leader by promoting democratic ideals without directly interfering in foreign wars. This belief aligned with Washington's warning against entangling alliances and conflicts with other nations, as he cautioned that such involvement could lead to detrimental consequences.

In order to separate themselves from european affairs, How did the origins of WWI relate to the warning Washington gave?

  • The origins of World War I involved a complex network of alliances and tensions among European nations, directly contrary to Washington's warning. The war erupted in part due to nations engaging in each other’s conflicts—exactly what Washington had advised against. The U.S. leadership felt that maintaining neutrality would be the safest course of action, allowing the country to avoid the destructive entanglements prevalent in Europe.

Long answer question: Give 2 reasons why the U.S. stayed neutral in WWI and then give 2 reasons why they went into the war.

At the start of World War I, the United States stayed neutral for a few important reasons. One major reason was that President Woodrow Wilson believed in staying out of foreign conflicts. He wanted the U.S. to be a peacekeeper and avoid getting involved in Europe's problems. Wilson thought that by staying neutral, the U.S. could help bring peace to the world instead of adding to the fighting.

Another reason the U.S. stayed neutral was that many Americans didn’t want to go to war. The U.S. was made up of people from many different countries, including ones fighting on both sides of the war. If the U.S. chose a side, it could cause arguments and division at home. Plus, most people just wanted to focus on their own lives and didn’t feel the war in Europe was their problem.

Eventually, though, the U.S. decided to join the war. One big reason was the use of unrestricted submarine warfare by Germany. German U-boats were sinking ships without warning, including American ships. The most famous was the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, where many Americans died. This made people angry and pushed the country toward war.

Another reason the U.S. entered the war was the discovery of the Zimmermann Telegram. In 1917, Britain showed the U.S. a secret message from Germany to Mexico. Germany was trying to get Mexico to attack the U.S. and promised to help them get land back. This was a huge threat and made many Americans feel unsafe. With these threats and growing pressure, the U.S. finally joined the war in April 1917.
