The Five Ideologies

1. Communism

  • Origin and Proponents: Created by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in the 19th century.

  • Core Tenets: Aims for a classless society with common ownership and no private property.

  • Political Spectrum: Far-left, advocating the abolition of capitalism and social classes.

2. Socialism

  • Origin and Proponents: Developed by thinkers like Marx, Engels, Owen, and Bernstein.

  • Core Tenets: Seeks social equality through public ownership and wealth redistribution.
    Political Spectrum: Left-wing, supporting government involvement in the economy. 

3. Liberalism

  • Origin and Proponents: Originated with Enlightenment thinkers like Locke and Mill.

  • Core Tenets: Promotes individual rights, democracy, and a balance between free markets and regulation.
    Political Spectrum: Center to center-left, depending on classical or modern interpretation.

4. Conservatism

  • Origin and Proponents: Founded by Edmund Burke as a reaction to radical change.

  • Core Tenets: Values tradition, authority, and free-market economics with gradual reform.
    Political Spectrum: Right-wing, emphasizing stability and individual responsibility.

5. Fascism

  • Origin and Proponents: Began in early 20th-century Italy with Benito Mussolini, also supported by Hitler in Germany.

  • Core Tenets: Promotes extreme nationalism, authoritarian rule, and suppression of opposition.

  • Political Spectrum: Far-right, opposing democracy, socialism, and liberalism.


Levels of Government in Canada

1. Municipal Level

  • Leader Title: Mayor (or Reeve in some rural areas)

  • Role: Heads the local city, town, or municipality council.

2. Provincial/Territorial Level

  • Leader Title: Premier

  • Role: Leads the government of a province or territory (e.g., Premier of Ontario).

3. Federal Level

  • Leader Title: Prime Minister

  • Role: Heads the national government of Canada.
