Cost benefit analysis is comparing advantages and disadvantages of protecting a coastline; working out the cost, what problems they create, their effect on the environment. They ask themselves: Do the positives outweigh the negatives?
There are 3 types of reasons:
Social reasons, Economic reasons and Environmental reasons
Happisburgh:
Social:
Positives: safety and security
Negatives: Properties losing value, people losing houses due to erosion and because of more erosion comes less settlements and less tourism
Environmental:
Positives: Wildlife are preserved and protected
Negatives: Sea defences disturb the wildlife.
Economic:
Negatives: Farmland is lost = lost jobs, Some sea defences limit tourism due to easy access, sea defences are expensive so all the money goes towards that and not other important things such as house compensation.
