List 3.5 Vocabulary Definitions and Sentences
DISCERN: to detect the significance or shape of something (usually something that does not clearly or sharply "stand out" unless you look carefully); DISCERNMENT: project of or skill/wisdom at detecting what is most important or wise to care about or to choose in a complex situation.
CONSTRUE: to 'make sense of' something not immediately obvious; to "puzzle out" or "settle on" a provisional or 'working' interpretation, whether or not that's the only 'possible' interpretation.
EXTRAPOLATE: to draw an inference about some "bigger picture" based on evidence that applies only to a "small sample".
COERCE: to apply or threaten physical force (or some other significant form of "pressure" or influence) as a means of getting someone to do something.
CO-OPT: to "take over" or "make use of" or "adopt" some image or design or practice already known-and-valued as the creation or property of another.
APPROPRIATE: to designate or reserve something for a special purpose; to take or seize or copy something created or possessed by another for “one's own,” without seeking permission from the original owner/possessor.
MITIGATE: to make less severe, or unpleasant, or harsh or to involve circumstances that warrant a tempered response to the situation.
AMELIORATE: to make better, more pleasant or comfortable.
CONFLATE: to fail to recognize distinction between two things and imagine instead that both are merged within the same single thing.
GALVANIZE: to stimulate by or as by a galvanic current; to startle or shock into sudden, focused activity.
CONSUMMATE: (adj) embodying and enacting the "pure, textbook, complete" version of some profession or role; (verb) to "complete" a marriage by the act of sexual intercourse; (verb) to complete or perfect a project.
PROTRACTED: (of an activity or event) tiresomely or unnecessarily prolonged in time duration.
PREEMPT: to 'intervene ahead of' some anticipated event or occurrence, whether for personal advantage, or to prevent it, or significantly alter how it plays out.
CULMINATE: to reach the highest or most fully decisive point or degree of some process.

SCRUPLE: feelings of "ethical concern" that prompt hesitation, restraint, or regret before or after deciding or acting.
QUALM: a "gut"-driven sensation of uneasiness, hesitancy, guilt, or regret about doing something.
CAVEAT: an experienced, friendly warning to be careful about or 'watch out for' some possible conditions that could affect how 'well' a project will play out; PROVISO: a stipulated condition regarding some anticipated situation or "agreement" or "deal".
