Notes on Creating a Presentation in PowerPoint
Chapter 1: Creating a Presentation in PowerPoint
Adding a New Slide
- Procedure to Add a Slide
- Click the New Slide button in the Slides group on the Home tab on the Ribbon.
- A new blank slide is created (this becomes the second slide in your presentation) which contains a title placeholder and a content placeholder.
- Title Placeholder: Area designated for slide titles.
- Content Placeholder: Designed to hold text or other objects (tables, charts, videos, pictures).
- The status bar will indicate the current slide number (e.g., Slide 2 of 2) and reflect the updated Slides tab, showing two slide thumbnails.
- Understanding Slide Layouts
- When adding a slide, consider what elements you want to include (e.g., title over bulleted text with an image).
- PowerPoint offers various standard slide layouts to help format your slides efficiently. A slide layout is an arrangement of placeholders for text, tables, graphics, and other objects.
- If a standard layout does not fit your needs, you may modify it or create a new custom layout.
- Example: Creating a layout to illustrate the relationship between companies and workers.
Formatting Text in Slides
- Changing List Levels
- To modify bullet points, use the Decrease List Level button in the Paragraph group to change a second-level bullet into a first-level bullet.
- You can also decrease the indent level using SHIFT + TAB.
- Adding Content
- After selecting a layout (e.g., Two Content), type your title (e.g., "Immediate Effects") in the title placeholder.
- Insert additional information (e.g., "Global trends") to automatically create bullets. Press ENTER to generate a new bullet point.
- Press TAB to indent the bullet to signify a sub-point (second-level bullet).
Saving Your Presentation
- After making changes to your slides, save your work by clicking the Save button on the Quick Access toolbar. This will ensure all modifications are stored.
Grayscale and Black and White Views
- To assess how your presentation would appear when printed in black and white, toggle to these views using the View tab and selecting the desired option in the Color/Grayscale group.
- Either Grayscale (shades of gray) or Black and White views can be chosen.
- Customize individual object colors in these views by selecting the object and using options in the Change Selected Object group on the Ribbon, should the default settings not meet your needs.
