Constitutional Amendments to Know

  1. 1st Amendment

    • Protects freedoms of religion (Establishment & Free Exercise Clauses), speech, press, assembly, and petition.

  2. 2nd Amendment

    • Right to bear arms.

  3. 4th Amendment

    • Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures; requires warrants based on probable cause.

  4. 5th Amendment

    • Right to due process, no double jeopardy, no self-incrimination, just compensation for eminent domain.

  5. 6th Amendment

    • Right to a fair and speedy trial, right to counsel, right to confront witnesses.

  6. 8th Amendment

    • Prohibits cruel and unusual punishment and excessive bail/fines.

  7. 9th Amendment

    • Declares that rights not explicitly listed in the Constitution are still protected.

  8. 10th Amendment

    • Powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states or the people.

  9. 13th Amendment

    • Abolished slavery.

  10. 14th Amendment

  • Defines citizenship; includes the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses.

  1. 15th Amendment

  • Prohibits denying the right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

  • Grants women the right to vote (prohibits voting restrictions based on sex).
