Simple Machines

SIMPLE MACHINE

LO: TO able to describe the differences between a simple and compound machine

PURPOSE OF MACHINE:

Machines help make life easier because they;

  • Change the size of a force- bigger or smaller

  • Make things speed up

  • Change direction of a force

List 3 ways machines make task easier:

  1. They can lift heavy things up and down

  2. They can help change the altitude

  3.

Give an example of how the machines:

  1. Change the size of a force- ramp

  2. Make things speed up- pulley

  3. Change the direction of a force-

Examples of simple machine:

  1. Door stop= wedge

  2. Knife= wedge

Compound Machines: Combining two or more simple machines to work together. e.g., car jack combines wedge and screw

TYPES OF LEVERS    20/08/2025

LO: To be able to recognize  a lever as a simple machine

LEVER COMOPNETS;

  • A lever is a simple machine that is, made of a long rigid object

  • A pivot of fulcrum about which it rotates.

1ST CLASS LEVERS

  • The fulcrum is between the load and the effort

  • They are forces multipliers

Ex: seesaw, pliers, crowbars.

2ND  CLASS LEVERS

  • Load is between the effort and the fulcrum

  • They are force multipliers

  • Ex: wheel barrow, bottle opener, stapler

3RD CLASS LEVERS

  • The effort is between the load and the fulcrum

  • They are distance multipliers

Ex: broom, fishing rod, elbow, baseball bat.

EXPERIMENT:

Station

Object

Types of lever

1.

Scissors

1st class   fulcrum is in the middle

3.

Stapler

3rd class lever           effort is in the middle

4.

Garlic crusher

2nd class lever              load is in the middle

6.

Broom

3rd class    effort is in the middle

7.

Tweezers

1st class lever fulcrum is in the middle

8.

Tongs

1st class lever   fulcrum is in the middle

9.

Wheel barrows

3rd class lever load is in the middle

10.

Catapults

3rd class  effort is in the middle

UNIT REVIEW FROM CHAPTER 8

REMEMBERING:

  1. A machine can make a task easier by changing the speed, size of the force and direction of  force.

  2. The unit to measure force is Newtons.

  3. (a) = T (b) = F (c ) = T (d) = T

  4.   class lever 3

UNDERSTANDING:

  1. Load over the effort, distance from effort to fulcrum over distance from load to fulcrum.

  2.  because 3rd class lever is a distance multiplier so it helps make the ball travel further, helping in sports.

INVESTIGATING INCLINED PLANES

LO: To investigate how changing the angle of the inclined plane changes the mechanical advantage.

EXAMPLE OF INCLINEDD PLANES/ RAMPS:

  • Bike ramp

  • Wheelchair ramp

  • Hill

  • Wedge

  • Slides

INCLINED PLANE: a simple machine that is used to spreads out the force needed to make an object making it easier to move.

INCLINE PLANES       28/8/25
MENTAL SET:
A ramp is a flat surface set at an angle or slope. It helps move objects up or down with less effort.
A lever consists of a par that pivots on a fixed point called a fulcrum. It is used to lift or move loads.
A pully is a wheel with a rope or belt around it. It is used to lift heavy objects.
A wedge is a device that is thick at one end and tapers to a thin edge at the other. It is used to split or cut objects.
LO: To be able to describe how inclined planes make life easier.

MENTAL SET
Examples of incline planes and ramps
- wheelchair vans      - knife
- truck ramps              - escalator
-  slides                        - bike ramp
- hill                              - see saw
