Western Expansion: U.S. expanded west after the treaty of paris. 6 new states were admitted.
Cotton Gin: Invented by Eli Whitney. In one it could produce nearly 60 pounds of cotton. Caused for a higher demand of slave labor.
Harriet Jacobs: Born into slavery, she was a writer and abolitionist. She provided a first hand experience of slavery for women.
Frederick Douglass: Born into slavery in Maryland and he experienced firsthand the violence of slavery. He ran away to the North were he gave speeches and wrote about slavery.

Missouri Compromise of 1820: Missouri was admitted as a slave state, Maine as a free state. The 36 30 line was drawn separating North and South as a. free and slave.
Compromise of 1850: In order to keep peace after Wilmot Proviso, California entered the Union as a free state, and popular sovereignty (popular vote) in Utah and New Mexico.
Kansas Nebraska Act: It allowed for the people themselves to decide whether to be a free state or a slave state. Act served to repeal the Missouri compromise. It reignited the disagreement between pro and anti-slavery. It started bleeding Kansas.
Abolitionists: A person who favors the abolition (end) of a practice or institution. The Abolitionist movement was an effort to end slavery.
Election of 1860: Event that starts the Civil War. Abraham is Republican, Douglas and Breckenridge are democrat and bell is constitutional union. Lincoln won with less than 40% of the popular vote. 81.2% voter turnout.
Emancipation Proclamation: Freed all slaves in Southern territories conquered by the North. Gave the North a moral cause. South lost foreign support. Slaves in the Union remained slaves.
1. How does slavery and the treatment of native Americans reflect the inequities we see today when having to do with race? Current day there is segregation between different ethnic groups. Native Americans are still forced to live on separate land. There’s discrimination in society.
2. Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act, of these three Antebellum deals which is the most controversial? The Kansas Nebraska act was the most controversial because it causes opinions to be involved. People were flocking to Kansas trying to help the decision go int their favor. This act reignited the disagreement between pro and anti-slavery which led to violence. Because of the violence this act Bleeding Kansas was caused.
3. Was the Civil War fought because of the issue of slavery or the right of states to disobey federal law? It was fought because Southern states want to expand and keep slavery. Southern states depended on slavery because it helped grow their plants which was their major source of income. They wanted to expand slavery west. They seceded so they can keep slavery.
4. Which Reconstruction plan do you agree the most with - Presidential or Congressional? Be sure to explain why? I agree with Presidential because it focused on unifying the country. Presidential was simpler because voters just have to pledge allegiance. Presidential focused on quickly unifying while being lenient towards confederates to ease tension. Also it allowed for quicker action without waiting for congressional debate.
