    • nationalism
  • militarism: the desire of a state to develop and maintain a powerful military in order to aggressively advance their own interests.
    • britain and germany had invested huge sums of money into bulking up their militaries
    • had heavy recruitment, built up navies and developed new weapons
    • the massive stockpiling of weapons was brought by the industrial revolution
  • alliances: an agreement between two states for mutual self-defense.
    • tension between military powers → secret alliances formed
  • imperialism: an arrangement in which one country brings another country under it’s political/economic dominion
    • bitter rivalries developed between powers bc of the fight for colonial expansion (think unit 6)
  • nationalism: a strong identification with one’s own nation and people, often to the exclusion of other people.

  • june 28th 1914 - franz ferdinand assasinated
    • austria-hungary declared war on serbia → germany came to austria-hungary’s aid → russia came to aid serbia → germany declares war on russia + france → britian declares war on germany → austria declares war on russia
