  • Variables: Represent characteristics that can change and be measured. They fall into different categories: 

  • Categorical variables: Represent distinct groups or categories, such as gender or marital status. They are non-numeric and classify participants into specific groups. 

  • Measured variables: Quantified using numerical data, such as reaction time, age, or test scores. 

  • Constructs: Abstract concepts like intelligence, anxiety, or motivation that cannot be directly measured but are inferred from observable behavior. 

  • Constructs must be operationalized by defining them in measurable terms. For instance, "intelligence" might be operationalized through an IQ test. 

  • Measurement Quality: 

  • Reliability: Refers to the consistency of a measure. A reliable instrument produces similar results under consistent conditions. 

  • Validity: Ensures the instrument measures what it is intended to measure. A measure of intelligence, for example, should not unintentionally reflect memory or cultural knowledge. 


Sampling and Population 

Sampling is crucial for generalizing research findings to a larger population. The sampling method directly influences the reliability and validity of conclusions. 


  • Population: Includes all members of a defined group that a researcher aims to study, such as all college students or all individuals with a specific medical condition. 

  • Sample: A smaller group selected from the population to participate in the study. A well chosen sample reflects the characteristics of the larger population.

  • Independent Variable (IV): The variable manipulated by the researcher. 

  • Dependent Variable (DV): The outcome measured to observe the effect of the IV. 

  • Controlled Variables: Factors kept constant to ensure they do not influence the results. 

  • Levels of the IV: Different conditions or values of the independent variable (e.g., doses of caffeine at 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg).
