France

  • lots of enemies like the pope and the holy roman empire

  • there was a 3 year truce between England and France from 1486-89

  • France wanted to peacefully take over Brittany through the marriage of Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany

  • The treaty of Redon in February 1489 gave Brittany English support , so in response to Frances peaceful take over, Henry sent 6000 troops to Calais and Boulogne which failed to do anything. so he sent 26,000 to Calais and Boulogne, France instantly wanted peace as they were too busy trying to conquer Italy.

  • Treaty of Etaples 1492 - Gave the English pension back which was £12,500 for 15 years, the French were to abandon Perkin Warbeck and any further pretenders, however Henry had to acknowledge Brittany was now apart of France

Scotland

  • Henry aimed to neutralize Frances closest enemy to England which was Scotland

  • there was a 3 year truce between England and Scotland from 1486-89

  • the battle of Sauchieburn lead to James III death in 1488 his 15 year old son James IV took over. He was more Hostile and had more Yorkist visitors

  • 1496- Perkin Warbeck married James III cousin Lady Catherine Gordon

  • Henry offered an alliance backed by marriage between princess Margaret and James, they married in 1503

  • Treaty of Ayton 1497- this was a full peace treaty and a 7 year truce. this was renewed in 1499 and became a formal peace treaty in 1502

Burgundy

  • Important to Henry as most English exports went through Burgundy controlled Netherlands

  • tensions rose as Holy Roman Empire and Phillip of Burgundy offering Hospitality to Perkin Warbeck . In response to this Henry placed a trade embargo on english trade

  • Intercursus Magnus 1496- ended the trade embargo

  • Intercursus Malus 1506- new trade agreement, flemished called it malus as they thought it was too lenient on the English.

Spain

  • Treaty of Medina del campo 1489 - gave mutual protection to both England and Spain. Spain agreed not top Harbor pretenders and Prince Arthur and Catherine of Aragon were set to marry. however this didn’t go smoothly as Ferdinand thought that Henry’s dynasty was too weak and that he still had threats to the crown, they also argued over Catherine’s dowry

  • 1501- Catherine and Arthur marry

  • 1502- Arthur dies

  • there is complications with the relationship with Ferdinand as Arthur had died ,however this was solved by offering Henry VIII

  • their alliance declined in 1504 when Isabella died making Ferdinand less significant and Henry lost enthusiasm.
