United Nations- an intergovernmental organization aiming to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, and achieve international cooperation. 


European Union- The European Union or EU, is a unique economic and political union between 27 European countries.


NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization - a military alliance between many nations of Europe and North America. 


Globalization - the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale.


Article Five - a key component of our NATO military alliance that states, “The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all”


Economic Alliance- an agreement between nations that promotes trade in some capacity.


Military Alliance- an international agreement concerning national security in which contracting parties agree to mutual protection and support in case of a crisis that has not been identified in advance. 


WMDs - weapons of mass destruction. Example: nuclear weapons. 


Pax Atomica- Our state of relative peace between the major world powers is maintained by the potential use of nuclear weapons in conflict. During this time, our world has experienced rapid economic and social development, cultural diffusion, and technological advancements. 


Sphere of Influence: a country or area in which another country has the power to affect developments although it has no formal authority.


Economic Sanctions: are financial penalties applied by one or more countries against a targeted self-governing state, group, or individual.


Truman Doctrine: President Harry S. Truman established that the United States would provide political, military, and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external or internal authoritarian forces.
