Nochlin poses the idea that it would be wrong to insist that there have been great woman artist. Why?

  • there has been no great woman artist (not to the same level as Michelangelo and Van Gogh)

  • If you start listing artist you don’t understand and fall for the trap

  • artist cannot control when they become famous (mostly is after their death do they become famous)

  • Discrimination and lack of rights stops them from being or becoming great

Woman artist?

  • adapting to masculine attributes and ideas to become great

  • acceptation to the rule that maintains the status quo

  • Acceptation that is proving the rule (woman do not usually wear paints)
