HOCKEY

  • Objective: Score goals by hitting a puck or ball into the opposing team's net.

History of Hockey

  • Origins trace back to ancient civilizations playing stick-and-ball games.

  • Modern ice hockey developed in Canada in the 1800s.

  • Field hockey has roots in Europe and is now played worldwide, including at the Olympics.

Basic Rules of Hockey

  • Teams consist of six players in ice hockey (five skaters + goalie).

  • Games are played in three periods of varying lengths.

  • Players must pass or carry the puck/ball to score goals.

  • No high-sticking (raising stick above shoulders).

  • Offsides: Players cannot enter the offensive zone before the puck.

  • Penalties include tripping, slashing, and checking (in ice hockey).



PE RULES

1. You may not bring the stick above your knees at any time.

2. No hitting or swinging at the puck while it is in the air.

3. Nobody checking.

4. No scoring from behind the half court line.

6. Keep both hands on the stick at all times.

7. Always start the game with a face-off.

8. Only 6 players from your team are allowed on the floor at all times.

9. Each goal is worth one point.

10. Play hard, but play to keep the opponent safe.


Hockey Positions

  • Forwards: Offensive players responsible for scoring goals.

    • Center: Leads attacks, takes face-offs.

    • Left & Right Wings: Support the center, play offense & defense.

  • Defensemen: Prevent the opposing team from scoring.

    • Stay near their goalie to block shots and clear the puck.

  • Goaltender (Goalie): Defends the net and stops shots.

    • Uses pads, gloves, and a mask for protection.


Terminology

  • Face-off: Start of play where two players battle for the puck.

  • Assist: A pass that leads to a goal.

  • Slap Shot: A powerful shot using a wind-up motion.

  • Wrist Shot: A quick, controlled shot using the flick of the wrist.

  • Sweeping: A technique for passing and shooting using a smooth, controlled motion.

  • Power Play: When a team has a numerical advantage due to an opponent’s penalty.

  • Penalty Box: Where a player sits after committing a foul.

  • Hat Trick: When a player scores three goals in one game.
