The bible reveals historical and religious truths about Jesus.
The gospel are primary sources of information about Jesus’ life
Eye witnesses and missionaries spread the Good News (Oral Tradition)
Sacred Scripture works with Tradition to inform us about Jesus.
The Gospels:
Mark: First Gospel. Written for persecuted christians in Rome, ( due to Emperor Nero)
Matthew- was written for jewish christians. Demonstrates Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament.
Luke : Written for Gentiles, it emphasizes women, the poor, and the vulnerable (Infancy Narratives).
John: Written for Jewish Christians; it focuses on the Word made flesh. Jesus and God are the same.
IV. Synoptic Gospels: Similar but Not the Same
Matthew, Mark, and Luke = Synoptic Gospels = seeing together
They tell us what Jesus did.
What do they have in common?
Parables: (Good Samaritan, Prodigal /Lost Son, Lost Sheep, Lost Coin)
Short Stories.
Surprise Twist.
Spiritual Lesson.
Miracles: (Water /Wine, Heal the blind, Calm the Sea, Resurrected Lazarus, Multiplied the Bread and Fish. Cured Lepers)
Show God’s power.
Give a glimpse of the Kingdom of God.
