Digestive system: Types of digestion

There are two types of digestion:

1. Mechanical digestion:

• Occurs when food if physically broken down through chewing, churning and mashing.

• Takes place in the mouth and stomach.

• It also aids in transporting the food further down to the small intestine.

2. Chemical digestion:

   • takes place when different digestive enzymes break down the bits of food into smaller molecules.

   • Chemical digestion also takes place in the stomach and small intestine.
