PART 1: BACTERIA FEATURES
Unicellular organisms
Prokaryotes
The earths oldest fossils (3.5 billion year old bacteria)
Made of….
a) Cell Membrane AND/OR Cell Wall
b) DNA & Ribosomes
c) Flagella
PART 2: BACTERIA REPRODUCTION
A) Binary Fission= asexual/cloning
b) Conjugation= sexual Pili= tubes that exchange DNA
PART 3: THE 2 MAIN TYPES OF BACTERIA
1)Archaebacteria
a) Translates into “ancient bacteria”
b) Not affected by antibiotic
c) Can survive in extremely harsh environments such as sewage or
acidic hot springs
2) Eubacteria
a) More common bacteria
b) Cyanobacteria (Their ancestors created free oxygen=1 st
photosynthesis)
c) Disease bacteria (Examples: strep throat, pneumonia, staph)
d) Enteric bacteria aka “pro-biotics” (aid digestion in intestines)
PART 4: DISEASE TEASTING AND CELL WALLS
Different types of cell walls indicate different diseases so doctors will
use different antibiotics
Antibiotic= medicine that kills organisms(not viruses!)
PART 5: BACTERIA & ECOLOGY
1) Nutrient Cycles
a)Decomposers(N, C)
b)Producers
Photosynthesis(C, O)
Chemosynthesis(C,O)
c) Nitrogen Fixation
d)Environmental Clean Up
2) Mutualism & Parasitism
3) Medicines and other products
