Morality and Self Control

  • Freud thought kids were born selfish, run by the id, later learn to be good

  • Yale study contradicts this claim demonstrating that babies are sensitive to morals and ethics

  • Theory of Mind: Understanding that other people have their own thoughts and opinions, usually forms around 3 years old

  • Marshmallow Test - Kids who could resist the marshmallow displayed greater self-control and were found to have better life outcomes, such as higher academic performance and improved social skills.

  • Physical discipline outcomes:

    • increased aggression in kids

    • lower cognitive performances

    • more behavioral problems

    • lower self esteem

    • evidence that there’s lasting negative effects

Autism

  • WAKEFIELD STUDY

    • undisclosed financial ties

    • small ass sample pool, like 12 kids

Sleep

  • Ferberizing - gradual extiction to help babies learn to sleep on their own by letting them cry

Breastfeeding

  • Said to lead to higher education, higher IQ, better income

  • BUT families with high SES already typically already do pretty well in life so this correlation isn’t necessarily indicative of a causal relationship.

  • moms from wealthier families also typically breastfeed more often
