SEPARATING MIXTURES

Filtration = Separates an insoluble solid from a liquid

Soluble = Can dissolve in a liquid

Material = Filter

Mixture = Two or more substances mingled together but not chemically bonded

Filtrate = The substance that can move through the filter and is left in the conical flask

Residue = The substance left behind in the filter

Evaporation = Separates a soluble solid from a liquid

Solute = What dissolves

Ex. of solute = Sugar

Solvent = What it dissolves in

Ex. of solvent = Coffee

Solution = Solute + Solvent

Ex. of solution = Sweetened coffee

Filtration Experiment

= A - Beaker B - Mixture C - Funnel D - Filter paper E - Residue F - Conical Flask G - Filtrate

Chromatography = Separates a mixture of inks based on how soluble they are in a solvent

Equipment during chromatography experiment

= A - Pencil B - Tape C - Chromatography Paper D - Ink E - Beaker F - Water

Distillation = Separating a mixture of two liquids based on their boiling points

Distillation experiment

= A - Thermometer B - Pear shaped flask C - Bunsen Burner D - Liebig Condenser E - Distillate (alcohol) F - Mixture of alcohol and water
