  • Their family motivated them, so their sons don't go into war. They wanted to set an example of peace to the world. 

7. What motivated those who favored it?

  • The ancestry motivated them to favor it. They wanted the best for the country that they came from and they really cared for it. For allied repayment of debts to the US and to prevent the Germans from threatening the U.S. Shipping.

  • The citizens have sympathy for the allies because they still have close ties to the nation they emigrated from. 

9. Why did the German threat to sink all ships in British waters push the United States to declare war?

  • The German threat to sink all ships because the British blocked supplies to germans and 750,000 German passed away. The United states declared war because Germany sank the Lusitania with many Americans on it.

  • Germany planned to ally with Mexico and aid each other in the war. Germany would help Mexico get their “Lost territory” from states in America. 

Eddie Rickenbacker - Famous Fighter pilot of WWI, He won fame as the Allied pilot with the most victories “American ace of aces” He was originally a racecar driver in France but then went into the U.S. Army Air Service. 

Selective Service Act - Required men to register with the government in order to be selected for Military Service. May 1917

Convoy System - Guard of destroyers escorted merchant ships back and forth in the atlantic. This happened from the attack from Germany on the Allies. 

American Expeditionary Force - A group of men from separate parts of the country come together to help fight “Over There”

General John J. Pershing - Leader of the American Expeditionary Force. 

Alvin York - He is a war hero who fought in the Meuse Argonne and became famous.

Conscientious Objector - A person who opposes warfare on moral grounds. 

Armistice - An agreement that Germany signed to Cease-fire and have a truce to end the war.

  • They made a Selective Service Act which required all men to register for. It randomly chooses men to be selected for military service. This got a lot of people to raise an army. 

2. How did the United States increase ship production?

  • They exempt shipyard workers from the draft. U.S. The Chamber of Commerce promoted Shipyard workers and gave flags to families. They also used fabrication, parts were made elsewhere and put onto boats at the shipyard, this made it much faster. Government took commercial and private ships and converted them into war boats. 

3. What was the significance of the convoy system?

  • It helped get merchants across the Atlantic ocean and make it safe for them to sell and transport goods. 

4. How did the arrival of new American troops affect the spirit of Allied troops?

  • The American troops came with freshness and enthusiasm. It made the Allied troops more ready to fight. 

5. Who led the American troops in Europe?

  • The person who led the American troops in Europe was General John J. Pershing. 

6. What new weapons were used during WW1?

  • The new weapons were the machine gun and the creation of tanks and airplanes. This was run by gas which helped them advance and break down barbed wire.

  • Red Cross american volunteers carried wounded soldiers to hospitals and they would care for them. They would amputate different parts of the body from the trench foot.
