Women Sculptures —

Caryatid, 420 BCE

• totally clothed, symbolizing modesty

• they had to be protected by Artemis (god of protection) and the male in the family, and their role in Greek society was to raise a family and stay at home

• **they were seen as something akin to wild animals up till ~13y old!! !*

• CLASSICAL PD BECAUSE CONTRAPPOSTO

• revolution: !! clothes now drape/conform to the shape of their bodies (“wet look”). this spurred a fashion fad in the ladies of London— they started wetting their drapes

• loose, and wavy, hair — remember ship

• these sculptures (Caryatids) were used as columns

• A RARER MALE VERSION OF THESE COLUMNS CALLED ATLANTE

The Wounded Amazon, Classical Period c. 450 BCE

• Amazons were a group of female warriors

• she was dying — the greeks wouda painted blood/a wound, but she has a calm, serene look CHARACTERISTIC of the Classical Period

• horse’s bridal around her waist—she grabbed it to keep her clothes on, keep fighting, and preserve her dignity

• SHE CAN BE COMPARED TO THE STATUE OF LIBERTY (came from France after we inspired them during the French Revolution)—THIS FACE IS ONE THAT REPRESENTS DEMOCRACY

remember there’s color in these, just lost. also a lot of Greek sculptures made with bronze but , as you know, very rare to find those actual copies
