Security Attacks- the application of malware

DDOS (Denial Of Service Attack) →

  • server is flooded with requests and is unable to handle too many at the same time

  • zombies are used to perform this

  • zombies = when someone has obtained remote acces to a device undetected

  • can be hard to distinguish between a website going viral or whether it is a genuine DDOS attack

  • also it is hard to evict the person involved: are they in the same country (same legal system). Furthermore, the people who are zombies are not aware they are part of the attack

Advance-fee Fraud →

  • getting someone to pay for something without the cast-iron guarantee of a return e.g. lottery

  • ‘too good to be true’

Scam baiting →

  • when you are trying to scam the scammer

  • this is illegal

Phishing →

  • pretending to be a trusted organisition that ask for sensitive information

  • emails a large range of people to find the weak link

Pharming →

  • attack local DNS server’s configurations so even if the user types the correct url in, they are taken to a fake website, that will still sensitive information
