Church:
Learning was always central to the mission of the Church, especially after the fall of Rome so really on the clergy was educated
It was central as there was a human capacity to reason which is part of creation
a want to learn about the beauty and order of creation
this was still time where faith and reason was connected
there was religion and philosophy
Why?
There was a population boom which would lead to people wanting to explore their reasoning
There was a large trade boom and the number of wealth people were growing
there was a shift from feudalism to money and resource based economy which created a middle classes

Universities were product of the monastic and cathedral schools, they were the church institution for all of society and not only the Church because of the want and need for education, THERE WAS SPECIALIZATION, noble and bishops.
