  • TRAFFIC LIGHTS

  • Flashing red lights at a fire station or airport require you to remain stopped until the lights stop flashing

  • Follow the arrows painted on intersections to show you which lane to go to. If there’s no arrows you should use the left lane if you’re turning left and vice verse for right. Going straight you can pick up either

  • If you’re turning from a multi-lane road you can turn into the one that’s nearest to you when there are broken lines direction you into another lane and when there are arrows directing you to another lane.

  • you can only cross through a special vechile lane for no more than 50 meters and you must give way to vehicles that are allowed to use that lane

  • two situations where you may need to merge are to join an existing lane or when two lanes become one

  • motorcycles always need a whole lane

  • a motorcycles indicator don’t automatically turn off they may stay on even when it’s driving straight

  • at least 1.5 metres between car and cyclist beside you

  • you’re allowed to drive on a flush median stri when passing a cyclist if there’s not room to pass them without leaving 1.5 metres between them

  • you can’t block a cycle lane or drive along it only if you need to turn, change lanes or get to a parking place at the side of the road

  • if you’re crossing a cycle lane you must give way to any cyclists in the lane

  • it’s against the law to go over the speed limit when passing

  • if you’re passing you must have 100 metres of clear road after you’ve passed the vehicle; means you need more than 100 metres of clear space before you start passing

  • if there’s a solid yellow line on your side of the road that means no passing

  • broken yellow line means a no passing line is about to start; you can cross over this line to finish passing but you can’t cross it to start passing

  • on a road with a centerline you must be able to stop in the distance of clear road in front of you

  • on a road with no centreline you must be able to stop in half the distance of clear road in front you

  • signs for a motor way are green and white

  • you can’t stop on a motorway unless it’s an emergency

  • you cannot make a U-turn on a motorway

  • you can’t stop to pick up or drop off passengers on a motorway

  • if you miss your exit on a motorway you need to drive to the next exit

  • you can only stop on a motorway if there’s a marked parking area, it’s an emergency or your stuck behind traffic that has stopped

  • if your car breaks down on a motorway indicate and steer your vehicle as far off the road as possible. lift the bonnet and the boot and turn on hazard lights. at night turn on the inside car lights too. dial 555.

  • on a one lane bridge there may be signs with two arrows. If the red is pointing in the direction you’re going you must give way

  • in wet weather increase following distance from 2 second gap to 4 second gap

  • you must have your headlights on if you can’t see a person or vehicle clearly from 100 metres away

  • driving 30 minutes after sunset or 30 minutes before sunrise you must turn headlights on

  • in the dark you can’t see as far in the distance you nut be able to stop safely within the length of clear road ahead that is lit up by your headlights (road with centerline)

  • if the road doesn’t have a centerline you need to be able to stop in half that distance

  • white reflection shows where the centerline is

  • red reflector shows where the left side of the road is

  • yellow reflector shows there’s a no passing centerline

  • blue reflector shows there’s a fire hydrant nearby

  • reflector post with white strip is on the left side of the road

  • Rreflextor spost with a yellow strip is on the right side of the road

  • reflector post on the left side of a bridge will have black and white stripes

  • reflector post with black and yellow stripes signals for three right side

  • blue markers that flash mean ice, ones that don’t flash mean fire hydrant is close by

  • if you see an accident sign (lit up triangle) slow down to 20km/hour

  • in a rear tire blow out the car wil sway towards the side of the blowout

  • front tire blow out will make the car sway from side to side

  • load on roof must not reach out more than three metres past the front edge of the front seat when seat is pushed back as far as it can go. 1.275m on either side from the centre of the car.

  • trailer load cannot stick out more than 4 metres behind the rear axle (trailer wheel)

  • if load sticks out more than one metre pst the back of the centre or 200mm from the sides you must tie a white red organe or yellow fluorescent flag on it

  • on a learner or restricted license the trailer, car and its load must not be more than 4500kg. when you’re on a full the combined weight must not be more the 6000k

  • maximum speed for towing a trailer with a van, ute or car is 90km/hour

  • there must be no more than 4 metres between your vehicle and the trailer you’re towing

  • if you’re towing a trailer at night it must have a red light on the back

  • if you’re towing a vehicle at night the headlights and red tail lights must be on

  • when using a flexible towing connection to any vehicle apart from a motorcycle the maximum allowed speed is 50km/h

  • if you’re using a rigid towing connection it’s 90km/h

  • maximum speed for towing a motorcycle is 30km/h and you can only tow it if it won’t go by itself

  • tire tread has to be above 1.5mm

  • the closest distance your vehicle may be parked to a vehicle entrance is 0.75 meters

  • if you’re driving on a space saver wheel you shouldn’t go any faster than 80km/h

  • how close can you park your vehicle to the approach side of a pedestrian crossing where no broken yellow lines have been marked? - 6 metres

  • what is the maximum distance a load may extend in front of a car? - 3 metres from the front edge of the front seat

  • if you tow another vehicle the maximum distance allowed between the two vehicles is 4 metres

  • when parking downhill on a steep road you should turn the front wheels of your vehicle towards the kerb and leave the vehicle in reverse gear

  • follow a cyclist at 1.5 metres recommended

  • yellow cat eye reflector means no passing

  • the wof label for your car should be displayed at the top right corner of the windscreen

  • one or more flashing yellow lights at traffic signals means the lights aren’t working so be careful and apply the giveaway rule
