Practicing Transitional and Topic Sentences

  • In-text citation at the end & inside the paper

  • 3 sections:

  • Set up - personal memories, getting from your life to the album; light on research

  • Discussion of Genre - definitions; more research

  • Album’s Impact on Culture; more research needed

  • In each paragraph/section you need to have topic sentences and transitions.

  • Topic sentences and transitions are needed before all sections

  • The thesis is in 1st paragraph

  • The next paragraph can be personal

  • Use “I”.

  • Ex: Before discussing the nature of the X genre, I will explain how I first learned about it as a child. ← signposts

  • Practice sentence: Before starting to talk about my love for pop music, and its culture, I will first define what pop culture is.

  • Now that I have discussed the actual genre of what the album Licensed to II is, I can explain the reasons why this album should be remembered and how it has made a huge impact on culture.

  • When I was a little girl, the song I heard was by X. However, I will be explaining how my music taste transitioned from one genre to the other.

  • I will first explain why hip-hop music is the only music I listen to.

  • Introduction:

  • 1. Topic (hip music, the band Beastie Boys)

  • Narrow this to ONE main album

  • Ask research questions: What made this album so popular? Why were so many people fascinated by License to III?

  • Thesis: What KIND of impact and HOW has the album changed things?

  • Don’t do this: Michael Jackson’s Thriller has made a huge impact around the world.

  • 2. Name the album in your thesis.

  • Michael Jackson’s HIStory album has made a huge impact on pop culture because he brought awareness to issues of sex, gender, and race. He also brought awareness to issues related to the environment.

  • 3. Somewhere in your paper, you need to define your KEY TERMS (genre, pop culture).

  • Sometimes you can define something based on what it is NOT.

  • When most people think of hip-hop, they imagine girls, cars, and big, flashy jewelry. However, that is not what K-Pop is.

  • Quoting - put marks around it, saying the source word for word

  • Summarizing - share the main point of the article and put it in their own words; you still have to have names, in-text citations, and the usual things you have when you quote.

  • Paraphrasing - putting it in your own words, but it’s not always short

  • How did K-pop originate?

  • How has K-pop influenced American culture?

  • How did K-pop get started?

  • How has hip hop influenced K-pop?

  • Discussion of Genre: define K-Pop; K-Pop is music that is fun and is meant to elicit joy when listened to and seen.

  • Find credible sources about the roots of K-Pop

  • Album’s Impact on Culture
