Video Editing OverviewDr. Khaled Gamal talks about the basics of sound in video editing.

Understanding Audio Gain

Definition

  • Audio Gain means the level of sound being inputted.

  • It is an important feature of the sound file.

Importance

  • Changing audio gain at the beginning of editing is very important.

  • This should be done before putting audio clips on the timeline.

Adjustment Methods

  • You can change audio gain levels:

    • On the source monitor.

    • Right on the timeline.

Gain Adjustment Options

  • Gain can be adjusted for:

    • All audio output on the timeline.

    • Specific audio tracks.

    • Individual audio clips.

Normalization Guidelines

  • Normalize all peaks to an average level of -3 or -4 dB before exporting.

  • Main sounds (like talking) should be between -6 and -12 dB.

  • Background music is usually set at around -30 dB.

Audio Gain Settings

  • Standard settings can include:

    • Set Gain to: 0 dB (OK)

    • Adjust Gain by: 0 dB (Cancel)

    • Normalize Max Peak to: 3 dB

    • Normalize All Peaks to: 0 dB

    • Peak Amplitude: -7.7 dB

Understanding Audio Volume

Definition

  • Audio Volume means the level of sound being outputted.

  • It is different from the original sound characteristics.

Functionality

  • Volume is adjusted during sound mixing.

Misconceptions

  • Lowering the volume when the audio hits the top of the audio meter does not fix distortion.

Volume Adjustment Techniques

  • You can adjust the volume of specific clips or overall tracks using:

    • Clip audio mixer.

    • Track audio mixer panels in the source monitor.

    • Access audio settings by clicking the Audio tab at the top of the software.

Master Volume Adjustment

  • Before exporting, change the overall volume using the master slider in the audio track mixer panel on the source monitor.
