  3. English- Jamestown,VA in 1607

England Imperial Stirrings

1500s

  • England was Spain’s ally and therefore didn’t have any interest in establishing colonies overseas

Mid 1500s

  • England is disturbed by religious conflicts when King Henry VIII separated from the Roman Catholic Church and established his own (1530s)

  • The protestant Elizabeth became queen and protestantism became dominant in England (1558)

  • This created and intensified the rivalry between England and the Roman Spain

  • Ireland Conflict

  • All non zero digits are significant

    • Ireland was an English rule and was Catholic

    • Ireland asked the Catholic spain for help to throw off the opressive and protestant queen

    • Elizabeth sent troops and crushed the Irish uprising (1570s-1580s)

    • The British confiscated land from the Irish and planted protestant lords from Scotland and England

    • English soldiers saw the Irish as “savage natives”
