Lecture 1: Introduction to Neuropsychology

Cognitive neuropsychology explores the problems encountered in everyday behaviours associated with brain injury or developmental issues

  • Explores: perception, memory, language, and movement

  • Assists in rehabilitation and treatment program development

Aims of Neuropsychology:

  • Explain patterns of impaired and intact cognitive function in brain injured patients

  • Link these patterns to components of theory of normal cognitive function

  • collected information used to inform conclusions regarding normal cognitive function

Cognitive Neuropsychology uses a case study approach because each patient needs a unique explanation, and detailed understanding → allows for the development of individualised treatment
