Body Planes Vocab

  • Anatomical position - the positioning of the body when it is standing upright and facing forward with each arm hanging on either side of the body, and the palms facing forward

  • Frontal - pertaining to the forehead 

  • Transverse - horizontal plane 

  • Sagittal - vertical place which passes through the body longitudinally 

  • Inferior - towards the bottom or away from the head-end of the body

  • Caudal - towards the tail or away from the head-end of the body

  • Posterior/Dorsal - the back of a structure, or a structure found toward the back of the body

  • Anterior/Ventral - "in front of" or "the front surface of;” side of body

  • Acromial - the outer end of the shoulder blade that forms the highest part of the shoulder

  • Medial - toward the middle or center

  • Lateral - to the side of, or away from, the middle of the body

  • Proximal - nearer to the center (trunk of the body) or to the point of attachment to the body

  • Deep - away from the surface or further into the body

  • Superficial - on the surface or shallow

  • Superior - toward the head end of the body; upper

  • Distal - a part of the body that is farther away from the center of the body than another part

  • Otic - of, relating to, or located in the region of the ear

  • Nasal - hollow spaces where air flows in and out

  • Ocular - the study of the structures and muscles within the eye, including the six extraocular muscles responsible for eye movement

  • Orbital - bony structures of the skull that house the globe, extraocular muscles, nerves, blood vessels, lacrimal apparatus, and adipose tissue

  • Buccal - of or relating to the cheek

  • Cervical - the neck area of your spine

  • Cranial - of or relating to the skull or cranium

  • Cranium - the bones that form the head

  • Cephalic - relating to the head or the head end of the body

  • Acromial - the outer end of the shoulder blade that forms the highest part of the shoulder

  • Olecranal - the large process of the ulna that projects behind the elbow, forms the bony prominence of the elbow, and receives the insertion of the triceps muscle

  • Sacral - an irregular bone that makes up the back or posterior third of the pelvic girdle

  • Lumbar - the lower back region of your spinal column or backbone

  • Antebrachium - the part of the arm or forelimb between the brachium and the carpus

  • Palmar - the palm or the anterior surface of the hand

  • Axillary - pertaining to the armpit area, including the lymph nodes that are located there

  • Thoracic - a space in your chest that contains organs, blood vessels, nerves and other important body structures

  • Brachial - belonging to the arm, foreleg, wing, pectoral fin, or other forelimb of a vertebrate

  • Abdominal - the part of the body between the chest and the hips that contains the pancreas, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, and other organs

  • Umbilical - of, relating to, or used at the navel

  • Pelvic - the area of the body below the abdomen that is located between the hip bones and contains the bladder and rectum

  • Antecubital - of or related to the crook of the elbow

  • Carpal - bones of the wrist that connect the distal aspects of the radial and ulnar bones of the forearm to the bases of the 5 metacarpal bones of the hand

  • Phalangeal - the bones of the fingers and toes

  • Coxal - a large, flat, irregular bone constricted in the middle and enlarged below and above

  • Femoral - of or relating to the femur or thigh

  • Patellar - your kneecap

  • Crural - of or relating to the thigh or leg

  • Popliteal - a diamond shaped area located on the posterior aspect of the knee

  • Sural - of or relating to the calf of the leg

  • Calcaneal - a large and strong bone that forms the back of the foot and transfers most of the body weight from the lower extremity to the ground

  • Plantar - of or pertaining to the sole of the foot

  • Tarsal - a set of seven irregularly shaped bones situated proximally in the foot in the ankle area
