The four main components of blood are:
Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes)
Function: Transport oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs.
Contain hemoglobin, an iron-rich protein that binds to oxygen.
White Blood Cells (Leukocytes)
Function: Defend the body against infection and disease.
Types include neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils, each with specific immune functions.
Platelets (Thrombocytes)
Function: Help in blood clotting.
They aggregate at the site of injury to form a plug and initiate the coagulation cascade.
Plasma
Function: Liquid component of blood that carries blood cells, proteins, nutrients, hormones, and waste products.
Composed mainly of water, along with electrolytes, antibodies, and clotting factors.
