SEL - 5 areas of social and emotional learning

    • Self-awareness describes an individual's ability to recognize their own emotions and related reactions


  • Self - Management

    • Self-management is about an individual's ability to regulate their emotions in different situations, control impulses, and manage stress.


  • Communication and leadership

    • Communication and leadership relate to an individual's ability to develop strong personal and professional relationships.


  • Executive function

    • Executive function skills are the higher-order mental processes that help individuals manage complex tasks such as organizing and planning, remembering information, problem-solving, and regulating emotions.


  • Social awareness

    • Social awareness describes an individual's ability to look outward and consider the needs of others and the world at large






4.17 - Self awareness

When you are self-aware, you can observe your life without judgment. Self-awareness enables you to notice the connections between your thoughts, emotions, feelings, attitudes, and related behaviors and their outcomes

Self-efficacy is a person's belief in their own ability to address challenges, achieve goals, and succeed in all aspects of life

Fixed vs growth mindset

  • Three key skills for self-awareness include recognizing emotions and understanding feelings, self-efficacy, and a growth mindset. 





4.18 Self-management

Self-management is the ability to accept responsibility for, be accountable for, and effectively manage one's own emotions, behavior, actions, and well-being.

Positive vs negative stress

  • positive stress occurs when you look forward to something that you know you can manage

  • Negative stress occurs when you feel you cannot cope with a situation or lack the skills to accomplish something


SMART goals

  • specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, timely


Self-discipline is the ability to use techniques for self-monitoring and time management. It is the ability to focus and persevere through challenges to complete a task and achieve goals. 


***Three key skills for self-management include stress management, goal setting, and self-discipline




4.19 Communication/Leadership

Empathy versus Sympathy

  • Sympathy is compassion for or commiseration with another

  • empathy is the ability to imagine oneself in another person's position and to experience all the sensations associated with it


Three key skills for communication and leadership include empathy, conflict resolution, and teamwork and collaboration.





4.20 - Executive Function

Executive function skills are the higher-order mental processes that enable individuals to manage complex tasks, such as organizing and planning, remembering information, and problem-solving.

Three main executive function skills:

  • Adaptability is the ability to effectively adjust to changing situations and conditions.

  • Problem solving is the ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems and evaluate the effectiveness of solutions.

  • Self-directed learning - taking the initiative to learn something because you want to learn it and take responsibility for learning it.






4.21 - Social Awareness

Social awareness is an individual's ability to engage, react, and respond in a variety of social situations with diverse groups of people.

The three social awareness skills:

  • Sociability is the ability to engage in social or collaborative situations.

  • Appreciation for diversity refers to the ability to recognize and appreciate diversity of culture and other differences that individuals encounter when interacting with others and forming relationships.

  • Responsibility to others refers to the ability to empathetically consider the interests of others and act responsibly out of respect for the larger community.
