Survey of Living Things

Three Domains of Life:

  • Bacteria (Prokaryote): Mitocondrion, Green nonsulfur bacteria, Themologa, Chloroplast, Aquifex, etc.

  • Archaea (Prokaryote): Pyrrolobus, Thermoplasma, Extreme Halophiles, Methano-bacterium, etc.

  • Eukarya: Animals, Fungi, Plants, Slime Molds, Flagellates, etc.

Relative Size and Detection Devices:

  • Human Eye: Human, Apple, Wasp, AntLight Microscope: Hair, Cell, Bacteria

  • Electron Microscope: Virus, DNA, Small molecule, Atom, Electron orbital

Domain Bacteria:

  • Prokaryotic

  • Unicellular

  • Must absorb food

  • Identified by special structures, metabolic differences and shapes

  • Found almost everywhere

  • Benefits of Bacteria: Make up food, help us break down food, help create medicines, etc.

  • Bacilli (rod), Cocci (round), and Spirilli (spiral)

Domain Eukarya:

  • Eukaryotic

  • Unicellular or multicellular

  • Modes of nutrition determine major groups

  • Kingdoms: Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista
