1.4 Spatial Concepts Notes
Space is simply described as a gap between two things
Absolute Location describes the location of a place in terms of characteristics that never change like latitude and longitude or address of a home unique to that place.
A site is all of the physical characteristics of a place. For example, a place being described as rocky, dry, etc.
Relative Location is a location of a place in relation to other places. This helps understand significance of the place.
A place is a unique location.
Sense of Place are the feelings associated with a distinctive characteristics of a place.
Flows are ways that different places interact with each other people, information, or goods flow from one place or another.
Distance Decay is a theory that states that the farther away one place is from another the less interaction those two places will have with one another.
Time-Space Compression is the reduction of time it takes for something to get from one place to another. It feels like time and space have been compressed so the distance feels smaller than it used to be due to technology.
Space- The area between two or more phenomena or things
Location- Identifies where specific phenomena are either on a grid system or relative to another _____
Place- The specific human and physical characteristics of a location
Region- A group of places in the same area that share a characteristic. They have boundaries, unifying characteristics, cover space and are created by people.
Site- Characteristics at the immediate location
Situation- Location of a place relative to its surroundings and connectivity to other places.
Sense of Place- The way humans perceive the characteristics of places in different ways based on their personal beliefs
Toponym- Place names, provide insights into the physical geography, the history, or the culture of the location
Time-space Compression- The shrinking of "time-distance" or relative distance, between locations because of improved methods of transportation and communication
Spatial Interaction- Contact, movement, and flow of things between locations
Flow- The patterns and movements of ideas, people, products and other phenomena
Friction of Distance- When things are farther apart, they tend to be less connected. This distance usually requires some amount of effort, money, and/or energy to overcome (Impact of distance on interactions)
Distance Decay- The inverse relationship between distance and connection (the result of friction of distance)
